The use of molding technology is quite wide in so many industries. In plastic industries its role is more prominent. The concept of insert moldi ng is becoming inevitable day by day in so many industries. Basically, mold is a hollowed out block or rigid frame. Let us know the concept of mold first. A liquid or pliable materials like plastic, glass, ceramic materials etc are poured in order to strengthen the material. When the liquid dries and becomes harder and sets inside the mold and takes the desired shape.

Conceptually, insert moulding is a technical process comprises of multiple combinations of metal and plastics into a single unit. A variety of inserts can be molded into plastic components and can be used in housings, instruments, knobs, devices and electrical components for a wide variety of applications in the medical, defense, aerospace, electronics/electrical, industrial and consumer markets etc.

Plastics are generally used in the insert molding process because it has a great wear resistance, tensile strength and weight reduction.  Basically insert moulding process comprises of two basic methods i.e post moulded installation and moulded-in- installation. It follows a defined step by step procedure which is described below.

  1. In the first step, Custom-built mold is loaded with inserts and the inserts may be loaded mechanically or manually.
  2. Then plastic in molten form is injected into the mold.
  3. After that it is allowed for cooling, the mold opens and the components are removed.
  4. In the next step, components are separated from the spruces and inspected accordingly.
  5. In case of Post-molding assembly, it include a variety of secondary operations, such as: Die cutting of stampings into discrete circuits, Bonding, Micro soldering, Circuit testing etc
